Mender is a brand for dreamers, lovers, adventurers and creators seeking to bring harmony to their lives by surrounding themselves with items of beauty that delight and heal. Led by April Cole Worley, a marketer who holds a master’s degree in political science and a partner at Bonus Genius, a creative agency based out of San Luis Obispo, CA, Mender brings non-gendered design thinking and a passion for botanical healing to their line of CBD bodycare. April partnered with Vanessa Pisias, a versed Apothecary and doula who sold her successful natural skincare business to join the company as product director when she began to study the vast health benefits of CBD topicals, and the result is an active, accessible line of CBD bodycare. Read on to learn more about what makes Mender stand out, according to April.
1. You use full-spectrum CBD oil in your line. Tell us what that means and why it’s important.
There are two types of CBD available on the legal market: distillate and full-spectrum. Essentially, full-spectrum oil is made from the whole plant, and distillate is further refined into a crystalline form that isolates the CBD molecule and does not contain terpenes or other cannabinoids. We use full-spectrum because it contains all of the other healthy cannabinoids and terpenes that occur naturally in the plant that some studies have shown work synergistically to improve the effectiveness of CBD in the body.
CBD is one of 100 cannabinoids found in hemp. According to numerous studies, primarily hailing from Israel and Europe, CBD contains anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant and regenerative properties that work on the cellular level. Scientists have discovered that our skin has cannabinoid receptors that feed and support the endocannabinoid system (ECS) (1). As we continue to learn more about this newly discovered system, research has shown that the primary role of the endocannabinoid system is, amongst other functions, is to regulate your nervous system, immune system and your organs, and fight free-radicals that cause illness (2).

3. You use CBD oil in your whole bodycare line. How does it work in something like your deodorant vs. your headache oil?
We utilize CBD’s anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, anti-bacterial and regenerative properties and pair it with potent botanicals to achieve a variety of results with our products. For example, the anti-bacterial properties in CBD paired with arrowroot and grapefruit essential oils make a powerful natural deodorant. CBD’s anti-inflammatory elements paired with copaiba and wintergreen collectively reduce tension pain to create a strong, all-natural headache remedy.
4. Who can benefit from using CBS oil?
Because each and every one of us vertebrates—and invertebrates, too; the oldest animal to show evidence of an endocannabinoid system is a 600-million-year-old sea creature—has an active endocannabinoid system full of cannabinoid (including CBD) receptors and the majority of our receptors are in our skin, I would argue, and the science backs this up, we all are good candidates for trying CBD.
Of course, the FDA requires that we not make any health claims, and that is okay. It just means that we are part of the movement to take our health into our own hands. The studies on CBD are out there, with more to come, and companies that use CBD responsibly and ethically will have testing certificates that prove potency and purity. It’s like Ralph Nader always said: “We need to be conscientious consumers.”
Aside from our Pain and Healing Salves that do incredibly well, our two favorites are the Youth Serum and the Body Butter. The serum is designed to leverage CBD’s ability to promote cellular regeneration and collagen growth to reverse skin damage from sun and protect against free radicals. We use organic extra-virgin olive oil from our local wine region (just miles from where we live and create) that has never been heated so it’s rich in polyphenols that work wonders on your skin. My husband loves it because it is also highly anti-bacterial and makes an incredible aftershave and beard balm to reduce red bumps, keep nicks clean and eradicate razor burn.
Our body butter is in an organic, grass-fed, whipped tallow base; it has the lush texture of whipped butter. We use tallow because there is not a single moisturizer on Earth that our skin can fully utilize like tallow due to its symbiotic chemical structure, making it the premier product for dry skin—full of vitamins A, D and E, amongst others. I use it on my son’s eczema [and] before spending time in the ocean, and I even use it as my night cream on my face. Plus, I love the “whole animal” concept.
6. What’s next for Mender? Anything new or upcoming you can share?
We are in constant R & D mode and chasing the research as it rolls in—so yeah, we have some tricks up our sleeve. We’ll be making the formal announcement in the spring… so stay tuned!
